(Hong Kong – 1 September 2022) The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) announced today that its member nomination period for 2022/23 school year would be from today to 11 October 2022. Based on the current School Nomination and Self-Nomination Schemes, a new enhancement titled Principal’s Nomination will be launched for school principals to nominate students with outstanding leadership qualities.

Every year from September to October, gifted students will be nominated to the HKAGE by their schools or by their parents / guardians via the School Nomination Scheme or the Self-Nomination Scheme respectively. Nominees will then enter into Stage 1: Online Screening Programme and those passing Stage 1 will be invited to Stage 2: submit student personal profiles for screening. Students passing both stages are eligible to enrol as HKAGE student members.

Considering some gifted students who have talents in non-academic areas, the HKAGE started to broaden its admission channel by inviting winners of the Star Bright Scholarship in June last year. This year, intaking channel via the Nurturing the Gifted Scheme is expanded in collaboration with the renowned STEM competition, the Hong Kong Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition (HKYSTIC). Moreover, the Principal’s Nomination is added to enhance our current nomination schemes for students who are gifted in leadership. With this new arrangement, school principals of each secondary school can nominate one potential student of Secondary 2 to Secondary 4 via the School Nomination Scheme. Nominated students, being exempt from the Stage 1 screening, will be invited to submit their personal profiles for screening as required in Stage 2.

Dr Jimmy WONG, Executive Director of the HKAGE, explained the merit of the new arrangements. ‘The Principal’s Nomination is an improvement to our current nomination schemes, pioneered to address the need of those gifted students with non-academic talents. The HKAGE continues to fine-tune our existing services and expand our nomination channels in order to enrich our diverse talent pool. The new admission channels and the Principal’s Nomination would provide more opportunities for gifted students with talents in different areas like performing arts, sports, leadership and STEM, etc. to join us. Though the Principal's Nomination will focus only on students with leadership traits for the time being, we will continue to explore the possibility of further extending the coverage to students with other talents in the years ahead,’ said Dr WONG.

The HKAGE also announced the admission results for the coming school year. A record high of over 12,000 students enrolled in Stage 1 during the nomination period from September to October last year. By this June, around 1,600 students passed the two stages of screening and successfully enrolled as HKAGE student members for the 2022/23 school year.

To facilitate the 2022/23 Nomination commencing in September 2022, briefing sessions will be held on 23 September 2022 to inform school representatives, parents and students about the overall application procedures of the Nomination Schemes.
